DALLAS — The COVID-19 pandemic has put the future of high school sports in jeopardy. Most large school districts in Texas will not begin their fall sports season until September, but many factors still remain at large. As many coaches and players remain optimistic for a full season, time will only tell if COVID-19 will have an impact that could interrupt an athletes future.
For Sachse High School quarterback, Alex Orji, making it to the playoffs is his goal this year. Normally the team would be preparing for out of district games. However due to guidelines handed down from the UIL, large teams like Sachse 4A and up, aren't allowed to take the field yet for practice.
The six-foot-two, 210 quarterback already has received seven offers to play at the collegiate level without even stepping on the field yet ahead of his junior season. Universities such as Baylor, Houston, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma have all extended out offers to Orji. The rising athlete says his focus right now is to prepare for a season of uncertainty. Orji and his teammates are taking it upon themselves to stay trained and ready to play.
"As long as we get the guys out, then everybody is getting work," said Orji. "There's not much we can control except ourselves."
COVID-19 protocols have kept Texas' second ranked quarterback from fully padding up alongside his team. Orji along with a few teammates are staying loose though every week at any field and or gym they can find. Due to UIL restrictions players aren't allowed to go workout or go into locker rooms until given the all clear. Orji says once they're allowed to play again, he'll be prepared.
"It feels like every week we have to go 1-0 as much as we can, and whenever they cut us off, they cut us off," said Orji. "As long as we try to stay undefeated I don't see anything wrong with it."
