AUSTIN, Texas — Two days after people in Austin woke up to a Black Austin Matters mural in the heart of downtown, a new art installation was painted on the East Side.

Twenty-five artists got up before dawn to take on another big project where the city's historically black neighborhoods are. Among those artists was Clarabelle Yao.

“Being part of the community and doing something for a cause you believe in is just so important to me,” she said. “As a young kid, I want to do more for the community. I can’t always donate, I can’t always go to protests or anything so doing something for Black Lives Matter is important to me, as well.”

She, along with dozens of other artists painted "Black Artists Matter" on 11th Street between Waller and Lydia Streets.

“I think art is a form of storytelling,” Yao explained. “It shows our story, it shows our feelings and it shows how we feel about living in the middle of history.”

“I’m just glad to be part of something, you know? Hopefully it resonates with people and makes them feel seen, as well,” she added.

About 75 gallons of paint were used to complete the mural. According to Capital View Arts, the mural is supposed to last for up to a year.
