AUSTIN, Texas — Tensions grew in Austin on Saturday night in a protest over the death of George Floyd and other police killings.

The demonstration started earlier in the day at the Austin Police Department, and swelled onto Interstate 35.

Officers were shooting bean bags and rubber pellets at people in the crowd. Self-appointed medics set up stations underneath I-35 to treat the wounded. Reporter Niki Griswold said the volunteers periodically took cover behind cars.

Volunteers also drove up and distributed food and supplied to protesters.

A second small was fire set in the area at about 10:30 p.m.

Officers later blocked 7th Street, and protesters pushed south towards 6th Street.

By 11 p.m. multiple windows were broken on 6th Street. Our reporters say Private Stock Premium Boutique and Lone Star Souvenir were looted. People also tried to bust open ATMs.

Just before midnight, APD blocked the intersections of Red River and 6th Street pushed protesters west.
