NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- The New Braunfels Police Department Monday morning reported heavy rain overnight has prompted the temporary closure of the popular Comal River within the city.

What You Need To Know

  • Heavy rain caused strong flows, poor water quality in Comal River

  • River closed to public for the duration of Memorial Day

  • River to be reassessed on Tuesday

Police attributed the decision to strong flows and poor water quality. The river will remain closed within city limits for the duration of Memorial Day. It will be reevaluated on Tuesday.

The Guadalupe River, police say, remains open and available for recreation in New Braunfels.

The department cautioned that forecasters were calling for more rain Monday night into Tuesday, which could put the reopening of the Comal in jeopardy.
