Castro announced the endorsement via Twitter, saying, “Elizabeth and I share a vision of America where everyone counts. An America where people – not the wealthy or well-connected – are put first. I’m proud to join her in the fight for big, structural change.”

Unable to raises the needed funds, Castro departed from the 2020 presidential race on January 2. He didn’t qualify for the Democratic debates that took place in November and December 2019. Fellow Texan Beto O’Rourke dropped out on November 1, 2019.

Following his tweet, Castro released a statement concerning his endorsement:

"There's one candidate I see who's unafraid to fight like hell to make sure America's promise will be there for everyone. Who will make sure that no matter where you live in America  or where your family came from in the world, you have a path to opportunity too. That's why I'm proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren for President."

Castro said he is next headed to New York to appear at a campaign event with Warren at King Theatre in Brooklyn.
