SAN MARCOS, Texas — The City of San Marcos cut the ribbon on a downtown "mobility hub" that's been years in the making.

  • Idea generated by community organizations
  • Meant to bring color and functionality to downtown
  • More additions are coming to the hub

The 6,000 square-foot space used to be nothing more than grass and a few seating areas at 214 East Hutchison Street. Now it’s been revamped and transformed into a green space and a public plaza. The mobility hub was first envisioned in 2017 to give residents and visitors a transit-oriented community space.

The new hub has bike parking and a repair station, a water fountain, a pet waste station, seating, art, a rain garden. It's meant to bring color and functionality to downtown for all of San Marcos to enjoy. The City says the mobility hub will be an access point for multiple modes of transportation.

“It’s a step in future-proofing San Marcos, and having accessibility towards other alternative transportation that isn’t a means to an end, and the reliability and dependability on a single-occupancy vehicle,” Splash Coworking Founder Carina Pinales said.

City council allocated more than $360,000 to the project, which Councilwoman Lisa Prewitt says is one-of-a-kind in the city.

“So we’ve got this first kind of green space downtown that will connect you as you’re going down to the river,” Prewitt said. “To me, this is a great space for youth as well. For them to get to come to this space and understand that there are mobility options in San Marcos.”

A couple more additions are coming to the hub including parking for ride share services, electric car chargers, and a bus stop.
