AUSTIN, Texas – Further testing by the City of Austin shows water samples in Lady Bird Lake are still positive for toxins created by algae in the water.

  • Multiple dogs have died after swimming
  • Deaths believed to be caused from algae toxin
  • It is illegal for humans to swim in Lady Bird Lake

City officials say they are testing the waters weekly and the most recent tests did come back positive for the algae toxin.

Those tests were conducted at Red Bud Isle, Auditorium Shores and along Barton Creek between Barton Springs Pool and Lady Bird Lake.

The toxin comes from Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, which the city says is common in Austin creeks and lakes.

The city says the algae will die off when the weather gets cooler. Until then, pets should not be allowed to swim in the lake.

Several dogs have reportedly died after swimming in the lake.
