LUCK, Texas  —  Willie Nelson will take part in a Q&A session for the screening of the 1986 film Red Headed Stranger on the film’s set.

  • Nelson starred in film
  • Will take part in Q&A
  • Screening will take place on set of film

The film is named after Nelson's 1975 concept album. In the film, a preacher seeks revenge on his wife and the man she left him for. Nelson and the movie’s screenwriter and director, Bill Wittliff, successfully shopped the movie to Universal Studios in 1979. The studio later rescinded its offer when the film’s prospective star, Robert Redford, declined the role.

Nelson and Wittliff decided to fund the film on their own with Nelson as the star. They enlisted help from friends and family to make the movie happen.

Luck, located northwest of Austin, was built in 1986 as the set for Red Headed Stranger. When the script called for the town to be burned down, Nelson requested a script change. He wanted to preserve the western town he now calls home.

On July 6, people can watch the first digital presentation of Red Headed Stranger. Luck Productions and Rolling Roadshow found the original film 20 years after its last screening. They had American Genre Film Archive digitize it.

The screening will take place on the film’s set at Nelson’s Luck ranch.

Following the screening, Nelson will take part in a Q&A session along with other special guests. Tickets for the film screening are $100. People can also purchase all-inclusive tickets that include access to both the film and an Austin Food & Wine Alliance dinner for $350. Tickets go on sale Thursday, June 20 at 10 a.m. at amplitix.com/luck.
