AUSTIN, Texas -- If running, biking or walking along Longhorn Dam is part of your daily routine, this story is for you.
- Longhorn Dam only offers narrow walkway
- Plans call for pedestrian bridge
- Residents asked to weigh in on plan
Austin Transportation and Public Works are working together to make some changes along the dam.
On top of keeping water levels in Lady Bird Lake, the dam is also a popular route among joggers and cyclists. However, the walkway is pretty narrow; enough for only one person or cyclist to come through. So, the city came up with five designs for a pedestrian bridge that could run along or across from the dam, which will be presented before the Austin's bicycle committee Tuesday.
Austin Public Works' Janae Spence said the designs will either widen the bridge, run parallel to the Pleasant Valley bridge or form a wishbone-shaped bridge that connects Longhorn Dam with the Butler Hike and Bike Trail.
"At this point, we wouldn't be touching the dam at all," she said. "There is one alternative that allows an extension on the bridge itself but it won't change how the dam operates in regards to Town Lake or anything of that nature."
But before the city moves forward on its plans, officials want to know what you think. An online survey has been set up and you have until July 10th to complete it. You can fill it out here.
