AUSTIN, Texas -- After more than 60 years of serving neighborhoods surrounding South Congress Avenue and Oltorf Street, H-E-B is now taking steps to make improvements to its longest-standing grocery store in Austin.

  • Store originally opened in 1957
  • Was 25,000 sq. ft.
  • After redesign will be 100,000 sq. ft.

The H-E-B located at 2400 S. Congress Avenue originally opened in 1957 as a 25,000-square-foot store. Once the redesign is complete, which is scheduled for 2022, it will reopen with more than 100,000 square feet including an eclectic food hall with indoor and outdoor dining spaces, and H-E-B’s first-ever beer garden.

The permitting and planning process is expected to run through late-2020, with the store remaining open and fully operational during that time.

Once construction begins, it’s anticipated to take two years to complete. H-E-B is planning to open a temporary store located at the adjacent Twin Oaks Shopping Center to serve customers during the construction process.
