According to the website PetMD, there are several ways to keep pets safe from coyotes:
- Avoid feeding wildlife: Coyotes are drawn to neighborhoods where people feed the wildlife
- Try to keep from leaving pets unattended: Bring pets indoors during twilight into the night when coyotes are the most active
- Beware during breeding season: From April to August coyotes have their young and will act protective of their babies
- Remove attractants outside homes: Attractions include compost, dirty grills, birdseed, and garbage cans
- Get rid of extraneous foliage: Coyotes seek cover in trees and shrubs so try to make sure tall grass is trimmed
