Officer Claudia Cormier was hit by Neil Sheehan on Saturday, May 18 while she was responding to a traffic hazard. Cormier, a three-year police officer, was found with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a Ford Expedition driven by Sheehan.
EMS rushed Cormier to Seton-Hays in Kyle where she underwent several emergency surgeries. She is currently in stable condition, but did lose her right leg, which was severed just above the knee.
In a press conference on Tuesday, San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp described Cormier as driven and courageous. She is currently surrounded by friends and family in the hospital.
“She has a long road ahead of her. This is a very devastating injury. But Claudia is a fighter,” said Stapp. “She’s probably one of the most driven individuals I know.”
Less than 48 hours after the crash, despite her severe injuries, Cormier FaceTimed her Chief Stapp to vow that she will return to the force.
Sheehan was arrested for intoxication assault on a public servant and failure to slow down causing serious bodily injury.
