AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched its Click It or Ticket campaign with the unveiling of a sculpture.
- Sculpture tells story of crash
- Law enforcement ramping up efforts May 20 – June 2
- Seat belts can reduce crash injuries
Kailee Mills of Spring, Texas, was killed in a crash two years ago after she unbuckled her seat belt to take a selfie. She was ejected from the car and died instantly. The other three people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts and only sustained minor injuries.
The sculpture of the just-airborne sedan is installed at Republic Square Park. It reenacts the crash that killed Mills. Through the windows, people can view details of the tragic incident. Video kiosks nearby also help tell the story.
The goal of the Click It or Ticket campaign is to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes. According to TxDOT, wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying in a crash by 45 percent in a passenger vehicle and up to 60 percent in a pickup truck.
As part of the Click It or Ticket initiative, Texas law enforcement officers are ramping up their efforts from May 20 to June 2 to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers.
