SAN MARCOS, Texas – A man is in custody, accused of entering the dorms of sleeping women at Texas State University. 

  • Man allegedly stole from Texas State dorm
  • Entered rooms with sleeping students
  • Confessed to two other crimes

According to Texas State University police, a man entered the San Jacinto Hall dormitory and walked into several unlocked rooms with sleeping female students early Friday morning.

The man allegedly took items from multiple rooms. University police were called and immediately apprehended the suspect as he was leaving the dorm.

All of the stolen property was recovered by police and returned to the students.  

The man is not a Texas State student.

Police later announced they had arrested 29-year-old Jose Ernesto Chavez.

During questioning with the San Marcos Police Department, Chavez confessed to a previous incident that happened on Sunday, Apil 21, at Dakota Ranch Apartments where a victim told police she woke up to an unknown man who was in her bedroom and had sexually assaulted her.

He also confessed to a burglary at The Edge Apartments, which occurred on Sunday, April 21 as well.

Chavez has been charged with one count of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a sexual offense, one count of burglary of a habituation felony one, and three counts of burglary of habitation felony two. He remains in the Hays County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
