AUSTIN, Texas — Prom is an exciting time for high school students to make memories with their friends before graduation, but it can also put a strain on parents and their wallets.

  • Prom Rack is in its 15th year
  • 700 girls participated this year
  • Many participants are in foster care

The Prom Rack event has helped students for more than 15 years. It started as a way to give foster kids an experience that so many miss out on.

"Some parents had to choose between getting their graduation stuff for their kids or getting prom stuff," said founder Gigi Edwards-Bryant.

On Saturday, volunteers helped more than 700 girls pick out two free dresses, shoes, and even jewelry.

Student Lexus Knox didn't quite know what she was looking for when she traveled from her home in Waco.

"I love a dress that fits right. I want to be comfortable, while I'm having fun on prom night," said Knox.

Lexus was in the foster care system before being adopted by her grandmother. She knew prom would be a bit of a financial burden.

"I feel like she still would have made a way for us to go to prom. This is just an extra release. It's still helpful," she added.

This year, Austin ISD helped bus some of the students who didn't have transportation.

"It's important to me, because I grew up in the foster care system. Never had any right of passage experiences and this is a very expensive endeavor," said Edwards-Bryant. "If we can convey some of the costs off, then it's really important to me."
