SAN MARCOS, Texas - A portion of Interstate 35 in San Marcos is getting a $31.7 million upgrade funded by Hays County and TxDOT.
- Major construction project coming to I-35 at Posey Road in San Marocs
- An I-35 overpass will be constructed above Posey Road
- Project expected to improve traffic and attract new business
The Posey Road Bridge is near the San Marcos Premium Outlets, and is a heavily traveled stretch of roadway. As one of the oldest bridges in San Marcos, county officials say the I-35 at Posey Road Project has been a long time coming. The bridge currently goes over I-35. TxDOT plans to flip that, building an overpass of I-35 that will go above Posey Road.
TxDOT reports more than 125,000 cars travel on this segment of I-35 daily. Even more so during busy shopping seasons when people are eager to get to the outlets near Posey Road Bridge.
Improving this interchange will increase mobility, safety, and connectivity, according to TxDOT.
On top of adding the new overpass, additional plans include converting the last of the existing two-way frontage roads to one-way. U-Turns, bike paths and sidewalks will also be added as part of this project.
There's also an economic benefit from the finished project, as San Marcos Chamber of Commerce expects the area around the upgraded interchange to attract businesses.
Construction is set to finish in two years.
