AUSTIN, Texas -- Early in 2018 Hancock Golf Course made some major changes.

  • Golf course changed hours of operation
  • Removed golf carts

Monday through Thursday it closed the clubhouse and golf carts were no longer available. Those wanting to play would just pay at an automated ticket station and then walk the course. After a year of operating this way, course managers have noticed some benefits.

“We saved a little on the expenditure side but are bringing in less revenue on Monday through Thursday when we don’t run golf carts. The net has been a positive. We’re losing less funds,” said Kevin Gomillion, golf division manager for the City of Austin.

Gomillion said they lost about $30,000 less than the previous year. He also added that the city is looking into the long-term future of the property and a study will be done to help determine the best use for Hancock Golf Course in the future.

It is a very valuable plot of land in central Austin but one that is also protected park land.
