AUSTIN, Texas -- The Austin Police Department on Monday identified the suspect and officers involved in a shooting on Friday, Aug. 3, that left the suspect injured.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Craig Anthony Carter. He is charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated assault, which are both felonies.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Kendrick Witt and Douglas Trahan. Both officers have been with the department for five years and are assigned to the Central West patrol. Both were placed on paid administrative leave, per department protocol.

The shooting and the events to led to it are under investigation.

About 7:38 a.m. on Aug. 3, police were called to the scene of a disturbance in the 4700 block of Chippero Trail, in northwest Austin.

It was reported a suspect was armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, a woman identified as Carter’s mother said he had pointed a gun at her, demanded she get on her knees, and then assaulted her.

It also alleged that following the assault, Cater proceeded to a house down the street where he punctured several vehicle tires.

A vehicle pursuit followed, and officers were able to stop Carter at Mesa Drive. Police said Cater then exited his vehicle and fired at officers with a handgun. Officers returned fire, and Carter was taken to a hospital for his injuries.
