AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Friday morning in northwest Austin.

According to police, the original call came in at 7:38 a.m. about a disturbance on the 4700 block of Chiappero Trail. The initial call was that a woman was screaming and a man was cursing at her and telling her to shut up. When officers were on the way to the scene, additional 911 calls came in regarding the incident, including one that said the suspect had a gun.

When police arrived, they made contact with the victim, who they believe is the suspect’s mother. According to police, the suspect knocked on her door, she opened it and he pointed a gun at her, demanded she get on her knees and he assaulted her. Officers also received a report that after the assault, he went to a house down the street and stabbed multiple tires on a vehicle. The suspect then left the scene in a black vehicle.

At 8:48 a.m. one of the officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop. The suspect failed to stop and led police on a pursuit. Police say the suspect was driving very aggressively.

As the pursuit reached Mesa Drive, one of the officers engaged in a pursuit intervention technique to try and stop the suspect. He was successful and was able to pin the suspects car along the median.

As officers got out of the vehicle, the suspect exited the driver’s side and produced a handgun and fired on the officers. The two officers shot at him and the suspect ran behind his vehicle. When the gunfire ceased, officers gave commands to the suspect about where to put his hands and took him into custody.

The suspect has been transported to a local hospital and is in surgery for his injuries. Police believe he is a 27-year-old white male.

The two officers who fired shots were placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues, as is protocol.
