TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas – The Travis County Sheriff’s Office reported that a male inmate at the Travis County Correctional Complex died Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office said that Naquan Jamar Carter, 23, was found unresponsive in his cell shortly before 10 a.m.

Officers and medical staff immediately initiated CPR. Austin-Travis County EMS responded and continued CPR efforts. Carter was ultimately pronounced dead at 10:39 a.m. An investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit, the Texas Rangers and the Medical Examiner’s Office is ongoing. This type of investigation is standard protocol with any death in custody. 

Currently, evidence indicates Carter likely died of natural causes. An autopsy was conducted and the final report is pending toxicology results.
