AUSTIN, Texas --In the event of flash flooding, Austin is keeping a closer eye on flood-prone areas with the help of a new technology.

You'll start seeing flood cameras in low water crossings throughout town. They may be small but they can help save lives by providing real-time images of roads that are known for going underwater during major rain events.

Austin Watershed Protection's Matt Porcher says anyone can access these cameras through atxfloods.com, giving people the chance to plan ahead, should they need to travel during a storm.

"One thing is that stream-level gauge report and cubic feet per second so, unless you're a fluvial geomorphologist, it doesn't mean a whole lot," he said. "But everyone knows what water looks like when it's the top of the road. So, very simple and easy to use. You can click the blue camera icon and then you can say, 'Oh, there's water over the road so I'll know to avoid that location.'"

The city says it hopes to install 30 cameras by the end of the year.

The first batch of cameras is currently keeping an eye on Onion Creek, Waller Creek and Williamson Creek.
