AUSTIN, Texas – Austin police shut down parts of Martin Luther King Boulevard due to a 12-inch water main break Wednesday morning.
The water main break caused a sinkhole, spilling water onto the roadway around 3:30 a.m. Austin Water tweeted on Thursday that the roadway is back open and has been repaired.
All of Martin Luther King Boulevard was closed between Airport Boulevard and Harvey Street on Wednesday.
For an hour or so, the water lines for several homes located along Martin Luther King Boulevard, between Pershing Drive and Clifford Avenue, were shut off. Water was fully restored at 3:20 p.m., according to Austin Water officials.
Crews on the scene suspect the cold and wet weather played a role in the rupture. They believe the pipe was installed in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The total water loss will be calcuated once repairs have been made.
The sinkhole did not cause anyone to crash and no injuries were reported.
Austin Water crews said they will release more information after they further assess the situation.
