Today's Big Stories

1. First 2 bags will no longer fly free; Southwest Airlines ends long tradition

Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday that it is doing away with its popular selling point for the first time in its over 50-year history.

Southwest, which built years of advertising campaigns around its policy of letting passengers check up to two bags for free, said people who haven’t either reached the upper tiers of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, bought a business class ticket or hold the airline’s credit card will have to pay for checked bags.

2. Measles cases rise to over 250 in Texas, New Mexico. Here's what you should know about the contagious virus

Measles outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico are now up to more than 250 cases, and two unvaccinated people have died from measles-related causes.

Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that's airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.

3. Trump halts doubling of tariffs on Canadian metals after Ontario suspends electricity price hikes

President Donald Trump's threat on Tuesday to double his planned tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% for Canada led the provincial government of Ontario to suspend its planned surcharges on electricity sold to the United States.

As a result, the White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said the U.S. president pulled back on his doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs, even as the federal government still plans to place a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports starting Wednesday.

4. Trump administration to resume military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing

The Trump administration said Tuesday that it would immediately lift its suspension of military aid to Ukraine and its intelligence sharing with Kyiv, a week after imposing the measures to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to enter talks to end the war with invading Russian forces.

Ukraine also said it was open to a 30-day cease-fire in the war with Russia, subject to Kremlin agreement.
