A post on Facebook has some parents of Indian River High School students on edge.

A student allegedly had to get medical help after eating a marijuana-infused cereal bar that was brought in by another student.

"Every single allegation that's ever made or tip that comes through, we investigate everything, myself along with administrators to include looking at school video to include witness statements from peers," said Indian River School District Resource Officer Carrie Mangino.

The situation involves minors, so officials can't explain exactly what happened, but these type of situations stem from much larger issues. The legalization of recreational marijuana in neighboring states is making it easier for teens here to get their hands on the drug.

"A half a day trip, and they can go to a dispensary and bring anything that they want back. They're finding ways to consume this drug. They typically wouldn't light up a joint, but they have no problem eating a marijuana-laced cookie or these gummies," Mangino says.

Law enforcement is working hard to make sure schools are drug-free, but officials say parents need to do their part.

"We have to help our teenagers make better choices, too,” said Mangino. “By normalizing drug use to the extent where they think it's OK to do, we have to be very careful as parents to make sure they know the impact it can have."

As of now, the Indian River School District Superintendent says the school is taking the allegations seriously and is providing resources.
