Two people have been taken into custody in connection to the death of a Fort Drum soldier.
Police have charged Private Jamaal Mellish, 23, and a 16-year-old.
It’s alleged Mellish kidnapped Harris & drove him to New Jersey where it’s alleged Mellish shot him in Byram Township. Mellish is currently in the Oneida County Jail on a military law violation. Mellish is accused of kidnapping Harris after a disagreement during a vehicle transaction, driving him to New Jersey, and shooting him, leaving his body in the snow on December 18.
Harris is from Guys, Tennessee, and came to Fort Drum in the summer of 2019.
Mellish and a 16-year-old juvenile were charged with numerous crimes, including murder and kidnapping. Authorities said he returned to the Watertown area after the killing and was arrested there.
He's currently being held in Oneida County, facing a military law violation.
Harris' body will be returned to his home in Tennessee Tuesday night, according to WMC5 in Memphis.
