An unusually cold air mass settled in to the Great Lakes during the middle of October. This brought snow to the ski country south of Buffalo.
What You Need To Know
- The Frederick Douglass Rochester International Airport is where official weather measurements are made for our area
- While areas south of Rochester can see measurable snow in October, it is typically November before the airport does
- Elevation plays a major role in who gets snow
- Proximity to the lakes also is a factor as water temperatures are mild in the 50s
While snowflakes in and around Rochester have occurred in almost every month, we typically don't have our first inch of snow until well into November.
Rochester's airport has an elevation of 550 feet, while the hilltops are over 2,000 feet. In addition, relatively warm lake temperatures keep areas near the water a little warmer.
