All this cold weather has been good for outdoor community skating rinks.
The Greece Parks and Recreation crew is busy keeping ice conditions smooth for skating. The Greece community ice rink at the town hall campus just west of the library is open for skating — weather permitting. Greece residents of all ages and all skill levels are welcome to skate. There is plenty of room, and even a heated hut to change in and out of skates.
The Gionta family donated 50 pairs of ice skates.
“For us, for me, and our team, we love seeing all of this," said Peter O'Brien, Greece director of parks and rec. "The pandemic has caused people to be outdoors more and embrace nature. It is kind of a back to our roots of ice-skating days of old. Supervisor Reilich, this was his dream when he came to Greece and was elected supervisor. He has made it happen and we are really experiencing it this year because of the pandemic. People are loving to skate and learning to skate. We have skate aids and adult skate aids. So people are really embracing what we have in Greece.”
The Greece ice rink is open Monday through Friday 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with extended hours 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. during February recess 15-19.
Irondequoit is also getting in on the outdoor ice skating fun. The ice rink at the town hall campus is open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weather permitting. Skate rental is not available. You can skate for free.
The City of Rochester’s ice rink at Martin Luther King Jr. Park is open for daily ice skating. Admission is $1 to $3 or $10 per family.
