Preparations around the Greater Rochester area continue for the upcoming total solar eclipse, which will engulf the area in darkness on April 8.
The canalside village of Fairport is ready to help you witness the celestial spectacle. To celebrate, there's all kinds of eclipse swag, from T-shirts to keychains and commemorative posters, for sale at various businesses throughout Fairport. The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association and Fairport Perinton Partnership hope you stop and stay awhile before and after the eclipse.
At the Perinton Community Center, from 12:30 - 6 p.m. on April 8, there's a celebration happening both inside and outside with food trucks, music, kids attractions and, of course, the must-have eclipse glasses.
"The last time it happened was almost 100 years ago and it's not going to happen for another 100-plus years, so we want to bring everybody together to share the experience. That is what we do a lot. We're trying to bring the community together and that is something that we want to do for this event, especially," said Perinton Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna.
Greater Rochester sits in the path of totality, so it is one of the best places to view it. The total solar eclipse will happen Monday, April 8 at around 3:20 pm.
