MANCHESTER, N.Y. — The Ontario County district attorney says a student accused of bringing a loaded handgun to Red Jacket High School is now facing charges.

According to District Attorney Jim Ritts, the 15-year-old boy was arraigned on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon occurring on school grounds. Ritts says the teenager is being held in secure detention and a hearing is scheduled for April 15.

Officials from Red Jacket schools say the district is now reviewing its emergency response plans following the incident. Superintendent Charlene Dehn says the school's response was correct and allowed staff to disarm the student while keeping others safe.

Dehn says despite that, the district is taking further steps toward making schools safer. They include looking into metal detectors at entrances and restoring the school resource officer position.

Dehn says because the state budget includes the district's foundation aid, they were able to add a school resource officer to the school's budget for next year.

The name of the 15-year-old student has not been released and the district says it will not be releasing any further information about his identity.
