MANCHESTER, N.Y. — The Ontario County Sherriff’s Office says quick action by staff at Red Jacket High School in Manchester may have prevented a tragedy this morning.
The sheriff’s office said they were called to the high school just after 10 a.m. Friday for reports of a student with a gun.
But by the time they arrived, the student had been disarmed and detained and the school was on lockdown.
Sheriff Phil Povero said a 15-year-old student was found with a loaded handgun and a second clip. He said the gun was discovered during a routine meeting the student had with staff each morning, though he couldn’t go into details of the nature of those meetings.
No one was injured and the student is in custody.
The investigation is still ongoing, and information is limited since it involves a juvenile. But while the student hasn’t been charged yet, they do expect charges to come and he may be charged as an adult given the nature of the incident.
