VICTOR, N.Y. — The New York State Police say a trooper was taken to the hospital to undergo surgery after being struck by a U-Haul truck that was being pursued by authorities.
Officials say they were looking for the truck on Friday morning after it was reportedly involved in a crime.
Police say the vehicle was traveling on 490 near the Victor thruway exit. Troopers were waiting for the truck in the u-turn at the Monroe/Ontario County line. When the U-Haul approached, police say the driver drove into the u-turn and struck a trooper who was standing outside his vehicle.
The trooper is reported to have suffered a serious hand injury, according to State Police Public Information Officer Mark O'Donnell.
According to the state police, a U-Haul truck was later located in an Irondequoit parking lot and two people were detained.
“Whenever we have incidents involving the description of a vehicle, obviously we look for that vehicle,” Alan Laird, Irondequoit Police chief, said. “We happened to notice that this vehicle is here and obviously the business is still closed, so that led to the officers taking it one step further. We’re still trying to determine if there is any connection.”
Officials have yet to release further information but say an update will be available on Friday at NYSP Troop E headquarters in Canandaigua.
