GREECE, N.Y. — A summary of the investigation has been released after now-former Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe crashed his police-issued vehicle on October 20.
In that report, lead investigator and retired Rochester Police Officer Joseph Morabito, who was selected by the town of Greece to head the investigation, says that members of the Greece Police Department violated several policies.
Morabito also says the officers should have recognized the significance of the crash at the time and asked for an outside agency to investigate.
The report claims that the highest ranking member of the department who knew of the crash that night failed to have the responding officers ask Forsythe if he had been drinking. Instead, the report says that individual told the responding officers to investigate "as they see fit."
There were other new details released from that night, some of which say that Forsythe claimed he tried to radio in when the crash first happened, but it was broken and that he had lost his phone during the crash.
The report claims that an officer who went back to the initial crash site on State Route 390 found that Forsythe had swerved into the oncoming lane multiple times.
There were several recommendations in the summary, including unpaid suspension for some officers, as well as a demotion. The report also recommended updating department policies involving fleet-involved motor vehicle accidents.
Forsythe originally told officers he swerved to avoid a deer and hit a guardrail. He submitted his resignation a few days after the crash. Forsythe pled guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired and to leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident last Thursday.
