Fire officials say 23 apartments were destroyed or severely damaged in a fire in Wheatland. Despite that, everyone made it out safely and there were no injuries to tenants or firefighters.

Andy Tackling shot cell phone video of the blaze.

The two-alarm fire broke out at about 7:00 p.m. Thursday inside an apartment complex on Robert Quigley Drive. The building was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived.

Fire officials say it appears the fire started in an upper-level apartment which spread to the adjoining units. But the flames were contained to one building in the complex.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says six fire departments responded to the scene and helped rescue several cats and dogs.

Those who live in the complex are feeling for their neighbors.

"My Dad called me actually and said ‘hey, there’s a fire on Robert Quigley Drive,’ and I was like 'no way' because I had heard all of the sirens and I came outside and we walked across the street and saw the smoke just coming through the sky and we saw these units on fire. So yeah, we heard all of the trucks… there had to be 8 or 9 trucks by the time I got out and they weren’t spraying water on just yet so it was just up in flames all of the way,” said resident Chad Batzel.

Several disaster volunteers were on scene from the Red Cross, which is helping the displaced residents.

Friday morning, the building was boarded up and much of it gutted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
