An Ontario County man was killed in a crash in Texas that involved two tractor-trailers.

Highway patrol troopers say Peter Smith, 41, of Clifton Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Darrien Quagliata, 25, also of Clifton Springs, was air-lifted to an area hospital with serious injuries.

According to investigators, the crash happened around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday on I-40 in Wheeler County, Texas. The crash scene is about four miles east of the city of Shamrock.

The crash report says Smith was heading west when the tractor-trailer he was driving crossed the center median and into the eastbound lanes. Smith's truck then hit a second tractor-trailer, causing the cab of his truck to be crushed, killing him. The crash caused both vehicles to roll onto their passenger sides.

Quagliata had been riding in the sleeper area of the truck when the crash took place. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer, Alan Andrascik, 48, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, suffered only minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
