A new outreach program was announced by the Rochester Police Department on Tuesday.
The RPD is taking up the "Leave Behind Naloxone" program.
While officers already carry life-saving Narcan with them like many first responders, they'll soon get more to hand out to people who are at-risk.
Included with the Narcan kits will be information about where to go for help.
"But we know from working with them or talking with them on a daily or weekly basis that this person is an avid user [of opioids]," RPD Capt. Greg Bello said. "This person is seeking help or not seeking help, for whatever reasons. But we want to get the Narcan into people's hands so, God forbid, [if] they do have an overdose emergency, [it is] available."
The plan is to roll this out starting Nov. 1.
The RPD will begin in its Clinton Section, which covers the northeast side of the city.
