A pair of adult sisters have been charged with murder and arson in the death of a 5-year-old boy.

Rochester police announced Tuesday evening that the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Tiakalya Hendrix, 21, and Taquida Hendrix, 31.

They are both accused of setting fire to the entrance of a home on Portland Avenue on July 29. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges on Wednesday.

"I pray that the justice system will bring judgment on the individuals responsible for this crime and they have many many many years to sit and reflect on the life of a 5-year-old that they took," Mayor Malik Evans said Tuesday.

Firefighters managed to rescue Malakai Stovall, 5, from inside the home. He died a few days later at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

His 19-year-old babysitter was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

Two firefighters remain out of work after being hurt battling the blaze. Their injuries include burns and fractures.

In a statement on social media, the Rochester Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 1071 thanked investigators for piecing the information together that lead to their arrests.

"Thankfully, we have the professionals we have working in the fire department, the police department and our partners with the ATF," Rochester Police Captain Frank Umbrino said. "They figure out a way to put their emotions aside and do the job that needs to be done."
