IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — It's K-9 graduation in Irondequoit as the police department adds two super sniffers to the team.

What You Need To Know

  •  Ollie and Ranger are the Irondequoit Police Department's new K-9 unit

  •  Both dogs are trained to pursue criminals and locate missing people

  • They'll soon have nitrate training to learn how to detect explosives and locate firearms

The new K-9s are Dutch Shepherds, Ollie and Ranger. Irondequoit Police Officer Dave Gramlich is Ranger's handler. This K-9 is trained to pursue and apprehend criminals, locate missing people, find forensic evidence at crime scenes and will soon be able to sniff out explosives.

"For police tracking, if we have a missing person whether that be a missing child or missing vulnerable adult, the dog can track the scent and eventually locate said missing person. As far as building searches, if we have an active burglary or someone hiding in a building, the dog will make entry and systematically clear until we locate the suspect," said Gramlich.

It's been more than 20 years since Irondequoit had a K-9 unit. Gramlich says the police chief, supportive town hall and community worked together to make it happen along with some donations to pay for training.
