The Rochester Police Department says it is preparing to dismantle and destroy unclaimed dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles.

Several bikes and ATVs police say were illegally operating on city streets were confiscated on Sunday during a joint enforcement detail by the RPD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police's aviation unit.

The vehicles are now at the police department’s auto impound. Owners can pay the fees to get their vehicles back, but they must prove ownership. Those not claimed will be destroyed.

Police say many confiscated dirt bikes and ATVs tend to be stolen.

“So it’s a combination effort that’s going to continue,” RPD Lt. Greg Bello said. “It’s not a one-and-done detail. We’re not walking away from dirt bikes and ATVs, but we’re going to continue our enforcement efforts and again this was just one more step to take towards those efforts and we look forward to working with our partners and seeing what the future brings.”

Police say more than 70 traffic citations were issued and a teen was found to be illegally possessing a loaded handgun.
