HILTON, N.Y. — The family of Gary Beikirch has announced visitation hours after he died earlier this week.
The service will be held at First Bible Baptist Church in Hilton on Jan. 7 from 3-7 p.m. while the Celebration of Life will be held on Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. Both will be open to the public.
Beikirch served as a Green Beret and combat medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1973 when he continued treating fallen soldiers during the battle at Dak Seang in 1970. Beikirch did this after being injured by a mortar shell and while under enemy fire.
Earlier this year, the area near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and future site of the War on Terror Memorial was named the Gary Beikirch Memorial Park in his honor.
He died at 74 years old after a battle with cancer.
