ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester military hero and Medal of Honor recipient Gary Beikirch has died.

His daughter Stephanie announced Beikirch died shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was 74 years old.

Earlier this year, the area near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Future War on Terror Memorial was named in his honor Gary Beikirch Memorial Park.

Beikirch served as a green beret in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1973 for his actions as a combat medic during the Battle at Dak Seang in April 1970, when he was injured by a mortar shell, yet continued to treat fallen soldiers in the middle of fire.

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich is ordering all flags on Greece Town Hall properties to be lowered to half-staff Monday to honor Beikirch.

Rochester Mayor James Smith released a statement on Beikirch's death:

"I was proud and honored to know Gary Beikirch. He was a hero who walked among us, but he did so with the humility and grace of the Lord he so faithfully served every day of his life. Gary Beikirch's service and sacrifice in Vietnam earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor; his many decades of service and sacrifice here in the Rochester area earned him the unyielding love and respect of an entire community. Gary Beikirch has left an indelible mark on our city. He will be sorely missed and on behalf of the citizens of Rochester, I send his wife Lolly and their family my love and deepest condolences."
