What might be the most noticeable part of Irondequoit's town hall is getting an upgrade. The work being done to spruce up the historic building's cupola is not for the faint of heart.

It's safe to say that the view from Lyle Hart's office is probably better than yours.
"It’s a very neat view," said Hart, a painter for Brooks Brothers Painting, which was contracted by the town to paint the Irondequoit Town cupola.
From his work spot 100 feet above the ground, Hart can see the city of Rochester skyline to the south, and Lake Ontario to the north. It's a perch where few would dare to go.
"I've been on a boom for 20 years," said Hart, "so working this high doesn’t bother me at all."
The town hall building is 70 years old. It is considered Irondequoit's skyline. Town Supervisor Dave Seeley says it's showing a few signs of wear and tear. He's had an eye on restoration of the cupola since taking office four years ago.
"This project is long overdue," said Seeley.
The town hall is a building with a neat backstory. Before ground was broken in 1949, then-Town Supervisor Thomas Broderick had apparently spent years squirreling away money to build a new town hall.
"Some people say he did it in secret, but it was put aside in a town account," said Seeley. "And it allowed them to pay $600,000 cash for the building. That's something any town supervisor would be envious of."
For Hart, just because the heights are routine doesn't mean the cupola project is.
"I'm proud of it," he said, adding that he’s often complimented on the work.
The restoration still has a few weeks to go before it's done.
"It's really something distinctive, and the story behind it is so neat," said Seeley. "And it's really something we want to preserve."
