The Department of Defense dispatched a crew to Rochester Thursday night to take custody of a ballistic projectile discovered in a garage.

Rochester police say the projectile may be for a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher.

They tell Spectrum News a man found the projectile in a cardboard tube in a garage and took it to a home on Schum Lane.

Officers say when he opened the tube, he found the item, and called RPD.

The police department then called the Department of Defense, and a special team from Fort Drum was sent to collect the rocket.

An area around Schum Lane was shut down for several hours out of what police call an “overabundance of caution.”
