A prison closure is sending shock waves through the small community where many families rely on a paycheck from the Livingston Correctional Facility.

  • Livingston Correctional Facility set to close in September
  • More than 300 jobs will be cut
  • Employees with seniority will be offered jobs at other state facilities

Many retirees and families gathered Thursday to support the call on state government to reconsider the closure.

Employees with seniority at Livingston Correctional will be offered jobs at other state facilities, but that means some families will have to pack up and move.

"All of these people have been on the road for years and finally make it home and to get home, and say I made it and then a phone call comes and it says not so fast, you're gonna have to sell everything you own," said Paul Youmans, a retired supervisor at Livingston Correctional Facility.

Groveland Correctional Facility is located across the street from Livingston Correctional and already, some 50 cuts have been made to accommodate employees with seniority.

It’s set to close September 1.
