A former Webster teacher and coach facing rape charges appeared in court on Monday for a hearing.

Kali Watkins, 42, is charged with first and second-degree rape.

He's accused of abusing a teenage student on school grounds. Prosecutors say the incident happened sometime between 2016 and 2017 when Watkins worked as a special education teacher in the Webster School District. He was later fired in December 2017.

In court on Monday, defense attorneys argued that prosecutors didn't provide a specific enough time-frame for the allegations.

"All I can say is we don't even have a date. We don't even have a date on an allegation that was one incident, and with all of the facts that were provided, the key point that should be provided is a date and a time," said defense attorney Jon Getz. "We kind of have a time, but we don't have a date."

Prosecutors say it's rare to have a specific date when sexual abuse happens.

"Kids don't tell right away. They wait, sometimes years, to tell when it happened and they don't remember the date," said prosecutor Meredith Vacca.

Prosecutors say the teenage victim disclosed the abuse nearly a year after the alleged incident happened.

Watkins was the Webster Schroeder varsity football coach and junior varsity girls’ basketball coach.

He's due back in court later this month.
