A former Webster Schroeder High School special education teacher and football coach, Kali Watkins, was arrested and charged with rape.
Watkins, 42, has been indicted by a Monroe County Grand Jury on first and second degree rape charges and was arraigned in New York State Supreme Court. Webster police, school district officials, and prosecutors held a joint press conference Wednesday morning announcing the arrest.
Authorities are not saying if the victim was a Webster student. However, they did confirm the victim was a female under the age of 15.
A 16-year-old Webster Schroeder junior who previously played football for Watkins said he learned the news on social media.
"He was a great coach and everything, but I figured he had something wrong with him," said the student. "He just seemed like he had problems, sexual problems like he did with the girls."
District officials say Watkins was fired in December 2017 following a police investigation that began in November 2017. District officials also say they were alerted of an unrelated criminal investigation that led to the one in Webster.
Authorities would not confirm where the alleged incident occurred, but said it stems from incidents allegedly happening in 2016 and 2017.
Watkins began as a special education teacher in the district in August 2015. He served as the high school's varsity football coach from 2010-2017 after being the team's offensive coordinator from 2006-2010. He was also the school's JV girl's basketball coach from 2008-2017.
"Words fail as I attempt to convey how grieved I am by these charges and how an educator allegedly abused his position to his students," said Webster Central School District Superintendent Carmen Gumina.
The district superintendent urges anyone, former coaches, staff, or students, to come forward if they have any information.
Meanwhile, Wakins has been released on bail.
