ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Former TV reporter Rachel Barnhart says she plans to make an announcement next week about whether or not she will run for the 25th congressional district seat, left vacant after the death of Louise Slaughter.

Wednesday night, Barnhart posted to Twitter that her team has secured enough signatures to get on the Democratic primary ballot.

She says she will continue to collect signatures until next week's deadline. In the past, Barnhart has also run for the State Assembly and Rochester mayor, but lost both those races in primaries, to Harry Bronson (D-138) and Lovely Warren (D), respectively. Both Warren and Bronson were on hand to endorse State Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle (D-136) when he announced he was running for the seat last month.

Regardless of Barnhart's forthcoming announcement, a primary will be held in June, as Morelle isn't the only Democrat officially on the ticket. Rochester City Councilman Adam McFadden announced his run last Friday.

Dr. Jim Maxwell, a local neurosurgeon, is the lone Republican to already announce his campaign against Slaughter back in January, before her death last month.

Candidates must submit a petition of 1,250 signatures between April 9th and April 12th to be placed on the primary ballot.

However, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has the right to call a special election at anytime.
