1. New York lawmakers pass another state budget extender nearly a week past deadline

2. New York nursing homes push to raise Medicaid reimbursement rates as many facilities struggle financially

Medicaid reimbursement rates are being brought up again as state leaders negotiate the budget. Some nursing homes are again pushing to raise rates, saying they can't maintain operations, but others argue current funds need to be managed better.

3. Renewed legislation would designate Finger Lakes region as a National Heritage Area

Fourteen counties would make up the Finger Lakes NHA: Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates.

4. Federal cuts impacting Finger Lakes organization dedicated to helping refugees

Under a recent executive order from President Trump, he instructed the Department of Homeland Security to terminate all categorical parole programs including humanitarian parole. That means Called to Care cannot help any new families seeking a safer life.

One man's health journey of cutting sugar helped him lose 60 pounds

World Health Day is an opportunity to examine the impact of sugar on our health and how one man transformed his life by cutting back.

Randy Beach may inspire you. Many people know him as a restaurant owner, now retired. He recently lost 60 pounds after making significant changes to his diet and lifestyle, including cutting out most processed sugars.

“My doctor was very, very worried that I was going to have a stroke," said Beach. "And he says we need to get that down. So with exercise and diet, which I went to see a nutritionist, she got me on the right road to healthy life. So I’m very, very happy.”

Randy’s turning point came when his blood sugar levels reached dangerous numbers. He was on the verge of diabetes, but with the support of his doctor and a new exercise routine, he made a decision to make lasting changes.
