World Health Day is an opportunity to examine the impact of sugar on our health and how one man transformed his life by cutting back.
Randy Beach may inspire you. Many people know him as a restaurant owner, now retired. He recently lost 60 pounds after making significant changes to his diet and lifestyle, including cutting out most processed sugars.
“My doctor was very, very worried that I was going to have a stroke," said Beach. "And he says we need to get that down. So with exercise and diet, which I went to see a nutritionist, she got me on the right road to healthy life. So I’m very, very happy.”
Randy’s turning point came when his blood sugar levels reached dangerous numbers. He was on the verge of diabetes, but with the support of his doctor and a new exercise routine, he made a decision to make lasting changes.
“If I can do it, you can do it. It’s so easy," Beach said. "When somebody lays the law down to me and says, ‘Do you want to see your grandkids grow up?’ That’s what changed it.”
Beach started by cutting out sugary drinks and refined carbs, focusing on whole foods and making healthier choices. Now, a year later, he’s not only lost weight but also feels more energized and confident. His story is a reminder that small changes can lead to big results, and it’s never too late to take control of your health.
Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that excessive sugar consumption is directly linked to obesity and numerous chronic health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, liver problems and an increased possibility of having a stroke. In fact, studies indicate that the average American consumes nearly three times the recommended daily limit of added sugars, contributing to a public health crisis.
By reducing sugar intake, like Beach did, we could be able to take a significant step toward better health.
Beach said he eats fruit in the morning, has cold tea without sugar, then has veggies or a small cup of soup for lunch. For dinner, he eats the veggies and proteins, but no sugar and no breads. For snacking, he enjoys black olives.
