1. New York has received more than 1,300 job applications for recruitment campaign for ex-federal workers

New York has received more than 1,300 applications for Gov. Kathy Hochul’s recruitment campaign for federal workers interested in state service who have been terminated from federal jobs as a result of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

2. Ulster Co. clerk rejects Texas judgment against New Paltz physician in abortion-pill case

In a statement, Taylor Bruck said he informed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that the judgment against Dr. Maggie Carpenter, charged with providing mifepristone — which can be used to end pregnancies as part of a two-drug regimen with misoprostol — to a Texas resident via telehealth, will not be filed. Bruck cited New York's Shield Law, which is in place to protect New York-based health care providers and patients from both criminal and civil liability in other states in connection with abortion and gender-affirming resources.

3. Hochul vows to protect New Yorkers from federal cuts to public services

Gov. Kathy Hochul says she will fight the federal government tooth and nail to protect the health and well-being of New Yorkers from sweeping federal cuts that will take a $300 million toll on New York state.

4. Department of Health and Human Services will cut nearly 25% of staff

The Department of Health and Human Services will reduce its staff by about 25%, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced in a video message on X on Thursday morning.

5. Social Security Administration backtracks on some ID requirements after backlash

The Social Security Administration is partially backtracking on a plan that would require all new and existing beneficiaries to travel to a Social Security field office to verify their identity.

Youth for Christ Rochester mentors use basketball to guide fatherless youth

Growing up without a father can have a serious impact on a child's future. The National Center for Fathering reports that more than 20 million young people in the U.S. live without their biological fathers. Fatherless homes account for 63% of youth suicides, 90% of homeless children and 85% of young people with behavioral disorders.

In Rochester, one organization is using basketball to provide mentorship and guidance for those without a male role model.
