Twenty-four apartments remain unoccupied at the MLK Gardens apartment complex in Poughkeepsie following an unexpected water main break on Sunday.

Officials say more than two dozen people were evacuated from one of the buildings.

Fire department officials said a pipe connected to a hot water heater broke in the basement, leaving residents without electricity or heat.

“There was roughly three-to-four feet of water in the basement," Poughkeepsie City Fire Department Deputy Chief Vincent Parise said. "It had endangered the electrical panels and compromised the boilers to the building.”

According to police, all of the water has been pumped out of the building. Hudson River Housing is providing temporary shelter for residents until further notice.
